So today I'm back with a wee book review. I've been meaning to start writing book reviews for a while now as I've got back into reading over the past year, but I always get far too into it and end up writing forever! What I like from others reviews is something that is short and concise, because book reviews are just so subjective: we all enjoy different things! I also don't like a review that gives too much away, why read a novel length review when you could be reading the novel, am I right?
So, I have came up with four questions I'm going to use to write book reviews from now on to keep on point!
Today's choice is We Are All Competely Besides Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler
What type of book is this?
This is actually quite a difficult book to categorise. It definitely fits in the very vague "general fiction" category. To give a short summation, this book is about a girl and her very unusual sister, and how the girl and her family cope when the sister is no longer around.
What did you like about this book?
It was completely unique. It's not very often I can actually say that about a book, because most books have very similar themes. This book has a familiar theme but with a very interesting twist. I really enjoyed the mystery throughout the first half about the sister, although I must admit I did guess before it was revealed. I also liked the cast of characters in this book, mainly because they were a bit awkward and none of them were instantly likeable. I definitely enjoyed the pace of the book, there was no overly descriptive text which I can find quite irritating. Lastly, I really enjoyed getting into the issues it raised.
What did you dislike about this book?
Not much I'll be honest. Although it did seem a bit far fetched, it did actually happen, so I'm not sure I can use that as a negative! The only thing I can think of is that it was a little predictable, with a subject matter so different I think I was slightly surprised by that.
Who would enjoy this book?
I don't think everyone would love this book, it's definitely not an all rounder. If you enjoy something a little different and a (non-crime) novel that keeps you guessing I'd definitely recommend giving it a go. I also think it would make an excellent book group title, there is a LOT that could be discussed and I'm pretty confident not everyone would love it.
Pretty high score for an author I've never heard of, definitely glad this got a good discount in the amazon kindle store!
