Wee Comic Book Review: Gotham Academy: Volume 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy

Hi lovelies,

Today I have another fantastical wee comic book review for you! You will have to please excuse the photographs in this post, I'm still working out the lighting in the new house and the weather has been less than useless for natural light!)

Today's choice is the super Gotham Academy Volume 1 by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl

Does the cover reflect the art inside...

Absolutely. and even better, the cover makes sense when you read the story.

The artwork inside is...

Perfect (to me). It's vibrant, clean lines and jumps straight off the page. You could easily imagine this as a cartoon, which is a style I enjoy. It reminded me a little of the Pokémon cartoons from the 1990's, but I have no idea why! Also, I loved that the artwork remained the same throughout the entire volume...long may it continue!

This magically mysterious comic book is all about...

A mystery! No seriously. It's follows our main character (the lovely) Olive as she navigates returning to boarding school in Gotham after something (yet to be discovered, partly explored here) mysterious takes her away from her mother. Olive has to deal all the normal teenage things, boys, bats and more boys. I really like the mysterious aspect of this, and there's a few different mysteries going on, things going on in the school (think Scooby doo), not knowing what's happened to Olive's mum, and Olive's severe dislike of a certain Mr Bruce Wayne (spoiler alert /batman).

What about that funky panelling...

There was a little experimentation with panelling in this volume which I thoroughly enjoyed, but it remained really easy to follow, perfect for a newb like me.

I personally loved...

everything. like absolutely everything. The art style, characters (especially Maps - so cute!), the panelling, the story, everything about this just made me really happy. I especially enjoyed that this is a comic book I could share with my kid nieces and nephews and because of that I didn't have to worry about graphic violence and/or sex on every other page (I don't want it in every comic book I read!).

But I wasn't a big fan of...

I do not have a single complaint. Oh wait! I do! I have to wait till MARCH NEXT YEAR to get my hands on the next volume...

On Goodreads I awarded this...

A 5 out of 5 stars! It is just so much fun and I loved it very much. I even ordered a copy of the special single(?) issue (Gotham Academy: End Game) that I discovered on the amazing Nerdburger's blog because I just can't handle the wait! I've seen some very mixed reviews on this but honestly, if you have an open mind and can just take something that is pure fun (and to be fair it is a little dark at times too!) then I think you will really enjoy this.

Gotham Academy: Volume 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl is currently £10.68 on amazon
