The Grinch Book Tag! [12daysof#Blogmas]

Bah humbug lovelies,

And make way for the Grinch book tag!

I had been planning to do a bookish Christmas tag and when I spotted this one being done by Novels and Nonsense AND Kap89x I couldn't resist (you know I love to complain about books I disliked!). This tag was originally by the lovely Thoughts on Tomes and please do check out a the links!

Now onto the questions!

1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Myers. It wasn't one of my favourites but I was really enjoying it, but Winter was the worst. The lack of world building was so evident, and it reminded me far too much of the hunger games to be a coincidence. It was also just far too easy and tied up in a bow! So disappointing and the fact that it was 800 pages long therefore took up so much of my time it's the one that makes me the most mad.

Also, I like to pretend the Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion was a standalone but the Rosie Effect was the absolutely worst and ruined everything.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn't enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I actually did enjoy the writing, and some of the references but the racial stereotyping and use of racist language was too much for me and so few other people seem to mention this in the many, MANY reviews...it haunts me!

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can't pick a villain!)

Samantha from The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. Everyone loves this book but I just think she is SO selfish! She tells so many lies to people who are being so kind, and it's just never addressed. She never once thinks "shit, I'm being really selfish here".

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn't real: Name a book you were spoiled for

Book 3 (Grave Peril) in the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I was a bit confused when I first started reading it, so I doubled checked book 4 (Summer Knight) on goodreads to check I hadn't downloaded the wrong one (it was an audiobook), and in the first line of the blurb it spoils the ENTIRE plot of book 3. Like the whole book is leading up to this reveal and like that it was spoiled. I ended up really disliking that book but I think it was the spoiler that actually ruined it.

5. It's freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn't connect with

Emma from The Drowning Lesson. This was the only book I DNF'd in 2015 (out of over a hundred books) because I couldn't stand this character, and the way she spoke about her baby. She also reminded me far too much of Kate McCann which just made me uncomfortable.

6. Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas is You' and it's giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn't stand

I always find this question difficult to answer, because I generally don't care too much about romantic relationships, i.e. I just accept when the author pairs two people together. However, after having a long think I came up with an answer! *potential spoiler* I hated when Murphy and Kincaid got together in the Dresden Files. It didn't make sense and ugh just no. Also, (please don't hit me) I really don't get the fandom over Cress and Thorne in the Lunar Chronicles. Like I like them together, but I don't really care that much about them.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won't get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren't motivated to read, but you don't have the heart to get rid of

MONTAAAAAAGE...

Armada (audiobook) - I have started but just couldn't get into it, not sure it's for me but it's WIL WHEATON so I can't get rid of it.
Divergent - I bought this AGES ago but I know that the series gets awful, and I just don't think it's for me anymore.
Game of Thrones - I was planning to force myself to read, back when I believed I had at least try to read what everyone else loves. but I have since realised AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT. I have tried to read this once, but it nearly blew my brains out. I might give it a go on audiobook as I seem to be able to handle epic fantasy better in that format but I'm not that fussed.
Bonkers - I bought this randomly with leftover audible credits before I got into booktube and listening to audiobooks, I'm just not really interested in it, at the time I thought only autobiographies were worth listening to.
Remember Me? - Having tried several of Kinsella's standalones recently, I feel I have to admit I have grown out of chick lit.
The Wasp Factory - This was a bargain in a charity shop, but I didn't realise how creepy it was, but again I felt like I should read Iain Banks (was not long after he died). Again, NO TIME FOR THAT.

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

***SPOILERS FOR HARRY POTTER, THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN, THE GREAT GATSBY***

OKAY. we good? good.

  1. I will never get over Dumbledore or Fred. I just can't.
  2. Also, when Gwen dies in The Amazing Spider-man 2. OH GOD THE FEELS. I can't watch that without crying.
  3. Lastly, I can't believe that bitch didn't care when Gatsby died. I just cannot.
9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

Unless I've completely forgot about a series I think went downhill, I really can't think of an answer to this one. Usually it's like I don't like a sequel, not the series itself that's the problem.

Although, thinking about it, I wish they had not added another book onto The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Too soon, and feels like milking it, I don't plan on reading it, I will always think of it as a trilogy.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villains again!)

Hmm, I can't think of a main character I really "hate". Percy Weasley was a dick, but he's not a main character is he?

Main character... The only main character I like written by Sophie Kinsella is Becky Bloomwood. Does that count? I also REALLY disliked Rosie, but only in the Rosie Effect.

SO that's me taking off my Bah Humbug hat and putting my Christmas jumper back on. Have you done this tag? Agree or REALLY disagree with me on any of these? hit me up below, you know I love a little bookish debate!

  1. I love this tag, have started thinking of my own answers. There are SO many books which have been super hyped which I've really not enjoyed.
